The Road to Andersonville: Michigan Native American Sharpshooters in the Civil War  (Movie / Film)

Presented by Chris Czopek, author of Who Was Who in Company K
Cosponsored by the MSU American Indian Studies Program and the Libraries' Diversity Committee, in commemoration of Verterans' Day 2014

When Union forces were in need of additional sharpshooters during the Civil War, a law was changed that previously prohibited Native American military service. The members of the Ottawa, Potawatomi, and Chippewa Tribes quickly responded to the Union's call. The documentary is their story, the story of Company K, First Michigan Sharp Shooters, the only all Native American unit in the North. In May 2010 the Ogitchewdaw Warriors Society, a group of modern day Native American veterans, traveled from Michigan to Andersonville, Georgia, to honor the graves of their ancestors who were imprisoned, died and buried there.
Michigan historian and author Chris Czopek will be here to introduce the film and answer questions. He has spent over 15 years researching Michigan Native Americans in the Civil War and has published a book called Who Was Who in Company K, the first book ever written about Company K and a resource for those wanting to know more about its members and their service...and their last resting place.
